This page is about the Ethnic My Child Dolls which were sold in 1987 until production ended and store stocks depleted. Unlike the regular pale/white MCs there were not any combinations to get these dolls in besides different outfits as their hair styles and eye colors were set. These ethnic dolls were available in the US and internationally to Canada, Australia, and possibly some other nations.

~*~ Hispanic Dolls ~*~ African Dolls ~*~ Production Differences ~*~

Hispanic My Child Dolls:

Sometimes in pictures, these dolls look like African dolls but you can tell the difference by the eyes. Hispanic doll's eyes are different (see Production pictures below). Around the hispanic doll's pupil are lines like the rays of a sun. These are orange on a Hispanic doll unlike African dolls and regular pale dolls which are black.

Girls only had one hair style, it is a verison/variant of the international midpart ringlet. They have a midpart that only goes halfway back to her crown and bangs from ear to ear. Unlike their International friends, the girls' hair was only a little longer than shoulder length and wasn't especially curly but had nice silky waves.
The girls are a little harder to find than regular my child girls. A loose girl can cost you around US$70.00 in good condition. The condition varies the price but original clothing doesn't seem to effect their cost much. This makes some sense in that you can usually get the same outfit off a regular my child doll for a much cheaper price. Just depends on the outfit and current availablity, I guess.
Hispanic Girl

Boys also only had one hair style, just short and curly. Pretty simple to do their hair, if only it were as easy to get them.
The boys are very hard to find, like a long haired brunette International girl. They can almost be considered a rarity. A loose boy can cost you around US$150.00 in good condition. The condition varies the price and sometimes having original complete clothing will up the price as complete boy outfits are not as plentiful as girl outfits, but still not rare. You can still usually get the same outfit off another my child doll for a cheaper price. Just depends on the outfit.

African My Child Dolls:

African dolls were the only ones I am aware of that actually had black hair. The hispanic hair is brown like the pale skin my child dolls.

Hispanic My Child Pair

Girls only had one hair style, it's the same as the regular pale piggytail style. They have a full parting (starting from forehead back to neck) and bangs/fringe around their whole head. They do come in 3 types. You can find them 'Made in Taiwan', 'Made in China' and Made in Canada (have 2 tags). The Taiwan version dolls suffer the most with face wrinkles and the China and Canadian version look the same (just the tag difference). Sometimes on mint China/Canadian made dolls, you will still find wrinkles as it seems time caused their chins and the area between their eyes to sag. This is a problem especially with the 1988 Ribbons and Bows International dolls.
The girls are not very hard to find. A loose girl can cost you around US$50.00 in good condition. The condition varies the price but original clothing doesn't seem to effect their cost much. Just depends on the outfit I guess.
African Girl

Boys also only had one hair style, just short and curly like the hispanic boys.
The boys are a little harder to find, but don't usually cost more. A loose boy can cost you around US$40.00 in good condition. The condition varies the price and sometimes having original complete clothing will up the price as complete boy outfits are not as plentiful as girl outfits, but still not rare. You can still usually get the same outfit off another my child doll for a cheaper price. Just depends on the outfit.

MY CHILD Doll Differences:

Here you see the differences between African American MCs and Hispanic MCs since sometimes just trying to tell by picture isn't good enough. Also shown are the differences between a MC's looks and the quality of the doll. While MC dolls are tag to be either made in Taiwan, China, or Canada, there are differences you can visually see as well. One is that some US dolls did not come with a tush heart. These are considered the '87/'88 US issue dolls.

Ethnic Eye Differences

African American Dolls

It may be hard to notice the black "rays" at the top of the pupil but they are there just like on the pale skinned MCs.
African American Eye Color
Hispanic Eye Color
Hispanic Dolls

Notice the orange "rays" at the top of the pupil which almost gives the appearance of a lighter brown eye color. =)

Production Differences

Made in China/Canada

Less chance of wrinkles (sometimes you will see a "glue spot" underneath their chin where the skin will sag around - which is what makes the spot noticeable but not anything to worry much over), softer face paint (when its strong, it's bright but more often than not, their facial coloring fades to a baby hue), & they have longer eyelashes than Taiwans (when they haven't faded).

Made in China
Made in Tiawan
Made in Taiwan

Their eyes protrude a little (especially the lower white parts) and I want to say that they are spaced farther apart (at least to me), their face is a little chubbier with usually strong blush tones and really short (almost nonexistant) eyelashes, they have more body stuffing so they are very firm dolls, some have a different face coloring (a combination orangy-pink mixture) & they REALLY prone to wrinkles (aka frowning faces. saggy chins, cheeks, etc..)
International 1987 Edition

Not found in the USA. They have peacher skin and some had VERY long hair which can reach their ankles or toes! They had no heart on their bottom. They normally have straight bangs.

1987 Edition
1988 Ribbons'n Bows
International 1988 Edition

Not found in the USA. They have peacher skin also had the longer hair styles but also recieved new outfits too. They had no heart on their bottom. They normally have curly/wavy bangs. This is when strawberry blondes were introduced to replace the redheads.

That's about it for now....
